Twilight photography — those stunning images of homes taken just after sunset — has become a powerful tool in real estate marketing. The warm glow of the lights against the evening sky creates a dramatic, inviting effect that makes listings stand out online. If you’re planning twilight photos, here’s how to get your home ready.
1. Light It Up
Lighting is the star of twilight photography.
Turn on all interior and exterior lights, including lamps, chandeliers, landscape lighting, and pool lights.
Replace burnt-out bulbs ahead of time and keep lighting consistent (warm tones work best).
If possible, add accent lighting to highlight trees, walkways, or architectural details.
2. Tidy Up Outdoor Spaces
Since the focus is often on the exterior, pay special attention to curb appeal.
Mow the lawn, trim bushes, and sweep walkways.
Put away garden tools, toys, and hoses.
Stage outdoor furniture with cushions and decor for a lifestyle feel.
3. Prep the Pool or Water Features
If your home has a pool, spa, or fountain, make sure it’s ready to shine.
Turn on pool lights and waterfalls.
Skim leaves or debris from the water.
Arrange seating around the area to highlight it as an entertaining space.
4. Clean Windows and Glass Surfaces
Light from inside your home will glow through the windows.
Wash windows inside and out.
Wipe down sliding doors and glass railings.
Open blinds or curtains to showcase your interiors.
5. Stage the Interior for Glimpses
Twilight shots often capture a peek inside.
Declutter visible areas like kitchens and living rooms.
Add fresh flowers or subtle decor for a polished look.
Avoid leaving TVs on — the light can distract from the warm glow.
6. Coordinate Timing With Your Photographer
Twilight photos are taken during the “golden hour” — usually 20–30 minutes after sunset.
Be ready early so the photographer can capture the perfect light.
Turn on all lights before they arrive to avoid delays.
